Time:
2 to 4 p.m.
Place:
Virtual meeting details will be in the calendar invite.

May's session falls on Global Accessibility Awareness Day!

This is a virtual drop-in session for accessibility checks with a subject matter expert (SME) from the disability community. Testing with these types of users is one of the recommendations from the Department of Justice for website owners to help avoid website accessibility lawsuits.

This month’s special guest is Marc Sutton, our screen reader consultant from the vision-impaired community, available to evaluate pages from your site and give you feedback on the experience of someone using assistive technology. Accessibility checks include missing or inappropriate image descriptions, incorrect heading structure, data tables missing headers, and reading order issues.

When: Thursday, May 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. This is a virtual drop-in event, you can show up at any time and don’t feel obligated to stay for the whole session. First come, first served.

Where: Typically you get a better experience showing up in person, but due to COVID-19 concerns, this session is Zoom only. The Zoom details will be sent in your Outlook calendar invitation.

Audience: those interested in digital accessibility; Siteimprove users who create and maintain UCSF Drupal websites, really, any UCSF websites created with any Content Management System plus those that communicate online via email, e-newsletters, PDFs. Find out what a blind user’s experience is with your online content.

How to Participate: You must register if you want to attend. (Requires MyAccess login.)

In your registration, please include the following: the URL of the site(s) or page(s) you would like read with the screen reader software.

Since there is not time for Marc to screen read your entire site, he can start with the navigation of your home page and address specific concerns such as:

  • user work flows
  • paths users experience in your site
  • fillable forms
  • PDFs
  • videos
  • predictable search
  • data visualization
  • JavaScript-based functions

Once you register, you’ll be sent a calendar invite with Zoom details.
